Winter does not have to be a weakening season if you know how to strengthen your immunity system during this period. In ayurvedic terms, the immunity is connected with the digestion and when the digestion is strong and your appetite is good, then your immunity is strengthened.
To keep your body content during this time of the year you should eat: fats, fresh organic milk and yogurt, root vegetables, fruits, Ghee (clarified butter), kidney beans, black beans, grains and products made from grains (wheat, rice). One should also drink warm water or ginger tea in winter. Food that nourish and balance the body in the cold, dry, winter season are the sweet, sour and salty tastes. Spices such as turmeric, coriander, black pepper and cinnamon are also known for their therapeutic value and for enhancing the immunity system.
Avoid cold food and drinks as they put out the digestive fire. Commercially processed foods, as well as canned, frozen, and packaged foods weaken the immunity. Bitter and spicy foods should be avoided as they tend to increase dryness in the body.
As the days are shorter and the nights are longer this time of the year, it's natural for the body to crave more rest. Try going to bed a little earlier, and you will wake up with more vitality.
Take the time to give yourself a massage with warm sesame oil and enjoy a warm bath will do your body good.
Eat well and rest!
