When you google "yoga" the first images you get are commonly strong inversions such as headstands or handstands. However, it's good to remember that yoga is not all about it! These are types of asanas that can be included into your daily yoga practice and they have their great benefits as any yoga poses, but they are not for everyone and they need to be practiced with caution.
Getting yourself upside-down is something agains gravity and our habitual patterns, which can give you a new perspective. It also gives your heart a break, because blood floods to the brain with little work from the heart. Other physical and psychological benefits include:
- increase immunity system
- improve balance
- strengthen arms, legs, back and core muscles
- build confidence
CONTRAINDICATIONS: head and neck injuries, high blood pressure, menstruation
The most important thing is to listen to your own body each day and according to that decide if any inversion could be beneficial for you or not. When practicing inversions always remember ahimsa (non-violence, compassion).
After any inversion pose let your body relax a moment in Balasana (Child's Pose).
